Outstanding Book in Nonprofit and Voluntary Action Research

  • Kathleen M Blee.  Democracy in the Making: How Activist Group Form.  Oxford University Press, 2012.
The committee awarded Democracy in the Making the Outstanding Book Award because it presents an empirically grounded, theoretically interesting, and innovative analysis of fledgling activists groups.  The book lays out a strong rationale and clear methodology for the research it presents and the contributions it makes to the literature on grassroots activism and democracy.

Virginia Hodgkinson Research Book Prize

  • Elisabeth S Clemens and Doug Guthrie (Eds.).  Politics and Partnerships: The Role of Voluntary Associations in America’s Political Past and Present.  The University of Chicago Press, 2010.
The committee awarded Politics and Partnerships the Virginia A. Hodgkinson Research Book Prize because of the high quality and often innovative scholarship presented in the chapters.  The book presents an excellent discussion of the historical and contemporary intersections of voluntary associations with the public and for-profit sectors, with clear implications for policy and practice.  In addition, a strong introductory chapter sets the stage for a well-integrated and well-written edited volume.
