Since the passage of Arizona’s SB 1070 in April 2010, national attention has focused on the introduction of copy-cat immigration enforcement legislation at the state-level.  However, such a focus misses the wider range of cultural and political initiatives taking place throughout the country that welcome immigrant presence and advance immigrant integration and immigrant rights. The CGAP Leadership Team asked Thomasina Borkman, Emeritus Professor of Sociology, to reflect on the early days of ARNOVA and CGAP Borkman CGAP blog Conferences of the Association of Voluntary Action Scholars (AVAS)  in the late 1970s were small informal affairs held in Universities where we could sleep in inexpensive student housing.
